Cedar?? Empty
PostSubject: Cedar??   Cedar?? EmptyFri Jan 23, 2015 2:34 pm

I managed to acquire some large pieces of cedar (green) a few days ago and was wondering in what sort of projects people have used cedar that turned out well. I rough turned a couple of bowls but the wood seem soft & I'm not to sure how those will turn out. I would appreciate your input.

It is a rather soft wood which I prefer to reserver the use of to hollow forms, or better put, for things that won't be handled much.  The biggest problem you may come across with cedar is its uncanny abillity to crack.  Heck just looking at it the right way seems to generate a crack or two.  Be sure you slow the speed down when sanding, the friction heat will bring out the best of its cracking ability.  So in general it might/will probably crack.  All you have to do is decide if you roll with it, or pitch it.  I tend to roll more bounce

On another note, here is the cedar vase I completed last month...

Thanks for the info. I haven't worked with cedar before, so this is good to know. Nice vase, is that turned with the pith at the center?

It was turned pith in center. I've done this a few times with minimal cracking so far. This one actually didn't develope any cracks off the pith, go figure.
